In the golden age of the lagoon, the "Little Council" was created, composed of influential citizens who advised the Doge and increasingly interfered in the political destinies of the city. The city became the hub of international trade. The jealously guarded art of glassmaking reached perfection and the masterpieces of the lagoon were soon in demand throughout the world.
